Just say no to sweaters

Unless your chicken has completely bare patches of skin because she was rescued from a battery hen operation or is going through a very bad molt, sweaters will do more harm than good. The way chickens stay warm is by fluffing themselves up. When they do this, their feathers trap tiny air pockets of warm air near their skin. This is how they stay warm all night during the winter.

What happens when you put a sweater on your chicken? It can’t fluff! The feathers are held down and the chicken is no longer able to fluff itself to stay warm. So even though chickens in sweaters are adorable, just say no to the sweater.
